«Interpreter I & II», 2019

This performance challenges the idea that an interpreter strives for a singular correct translation. Aided by a conference console adapted for the performance, the artist orchestrates the soundtracks of three live translators into a polyphonic composition in real time on the spot. The original English statement or text becomes obscured and irrelevant. Different languages, such as French, Spanish and Arabic, are reinterpreted by layering their essential structures of rhythm and melody. The transformation takes its final form as a fluid, multi-dimensional sound experience.
